📕 E-BookA philosophical psychology that does not explain consciousness but makes it visible in its inner structure. Volume I of Johannes Heinrichs’ great late work — the attempt to systematically renew the connection between philosophy and psychology, which has been broken for a hundred years.
“Critique” here means nothing pejorative but — in the sense of Kant’s reflexive turn — the epistemological examination of the basic elements of a discipline. Unlike “pure” reason, however, integral reason must hold nothing human to be alien to it.
Heinrichs starts from a thesis that contemporary philosophy has suppressed: self-consciousness is lived reflection — accompanying oneself, self-reference. From this “radical faculty” he derives, in critical engagement with C. G. Jung, the four functions of consciousness: perception, thinking, feeling and intuition.
Structure of this volume
- The functional circle of the faculties of knowledge — the four stems of knowledge and their mutual interpenetration, including a “grammar of feelings”
- The functional circle of practice — knowing, valuing, willing, acting; in engagement with Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
- The semiotic levels — action, language, art, mysticism as ascending levels of signs
- Supramental consciousness — a critical examination of spiritual and “integral” models of consciousness (with a critique of Wilber’s “Spiral Dynamics”)
Methodologically, the book is carried by Heinrichs’ procedure of dialectical subsumption from the logic of reflection, which he here applies to consciousness itself.
