Hegel's System as a Whole – A Map
Logic, Nature and Spirit
📕 E-BookHegel Interpretations Edition · Introduction and Foundations
A map of Hegel’s system: what it stands on, how its parts hang together and where one can enter it.
Hegel warned against every overview of his system; it gives only “a picture for representation”, and the whole is comprehended only on the way through its parts. This book takes the warning as its rule. It draws the map and says at every point whether what is drawn in is already grounded or only announced, and where the grounding is to be found. The paths themselves are walked by the individual books of the series, which interpret logic, nature and spirit paragraph by paragraph. Even so, the book is intelligible on its own: where it refers onward, the basic idea is already stated.
Its core is formed by three circles, three relations of the logic to the rest of the system. In the logic itself every determination follows from the deficiency of the previous one. To nature and spirit the logic gives forms and a standard, but no findings; there, what is found may refute it. And in the system as a whole it is one of three members, each of which is in turn the middle. This makes it possible to say in what sense a whole can be called “absolute” and yet be corrected, for example where Hegel rejected the descent of more developed animals from lower ones.
Structure
Part I: What the system stands on and how it is built – What a system is, truth as process, the three sides of the logical, the three circles and the beginning.
Part II: The parts within the whole – The path of the Encyclopaedia from logic through nature to spirit: subjective spirit, right and morality, family and civil society, state and world history, art, religion and philosophy, and finally the whole read backwards.
Part III: Paths and perspectives – Other entrances: the Phenomenology, the history of philosophy, one’s own thinking and willing, living together.
Part IV: The whole put to the test – Vittorio Hösle’s objections from the demand for ultimate justification and a response to them; what a system can achieve today; a whole that can be corrected.
Part V: Tools – Lectures and additions, the genesis of the system, reading paths through the series, concordance, chronology, diagrams.
What is special
Each chapter begins with a guiding question. The main course states Hegel’s thoughts in plain language and names what speaks for and against them. Hegel’s wording and voices from research stand in separate sections “On the text”, which can be skipped on first reading. Where the author goes beyond Hegel, the paragraph is specially marked.
Relation to the other books
This book is the overview of the Hegel series. What it maps is worked out in Hegel’s Logic – Logic of Thinking, Hegel’s Philosophy of Nature – The Idea in Its Otherness, Hegel’s Philosophy of Subjective Spirit – How Nature Becomes Will, Hegel’s Philosophy of Right – How Freedom Becomes Real, Hegel’s Philosophy of Absolute Spirit – How Spirit Comes to Know Itself and Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit – How Certainty Becomes Truth; Hegel’s life is told in Hegel’s Life and Work – Stations of a Path of Thought. The ground from which Part I starts is laid by Truth and Thinking – Ordering Without Losing.
