The Ethics of Action

You already act intelligently and well – you just don’t always notice it.

Picture this: A red light, at two in the morning, not a soul in sight. You stop. Not from fear of punishment, not because someone is watching – but because you already embody a practice that is more intelligent than you think. This text makes conscious what you are already doing.

The Central Thesis

Intelligent and good action are not opposites – they are two sides of the same living practice. The text does not prescribe morality from the outside, but makes conscious the universal structures that you as an actor already perform.

Structure

Part I: What we already do (Chapters 1-6) – Gradual recognition of one’s own action intelligence: from attention through the four levels of embodied intelligence to the means-end structure that underlies all action. The body as foundation.

Part II: Four principles as tools (Chapters 7-12)

• Elephant Principle (Integration): The diversity of perspectives as resource
• Detective Principle (Means Reflection): Consciously examine the means of action
• Sublation Principle: Not suppress conflicts, but sublate them productively
• Golden Rule as Compass: Authentic expression as standard

Part III: The social and cosmic dimension (Chapters 13-18) – From subjective to objective spirit: institutions, hierarchies of purposes and the expanding circles of action – from individual practice to social reality.

The Special Quality

The text resolves the apparent contradiction between prudence and morality: Whoever truly acts intelligently already acts well — and whoever truly acts well acts intelligently. This insight is not asserted, but discovered in performative enactment in one’s own action. The red light at two in the morning is just the beginning.

Relationship to the Other Books

The action text is Volume 3 of the trilogy after the truth text and the thinking text. What is performatively discovered in the truth text and methodically cultivated in the thinking text, finds here its practical validation in action. The four principles (integration, means reflection, sublation, golden rule) are the action-practical side of the same structures that Hegel’s Logic systematically justifies.

Can be read independently – unfolds its full depth in interplay with the first two volumes.
