The original source text of Johannes Heinrichs’ theory of language — in its first version of 1981. This second volume of “Reflexion-Theoretical Semiotics” unfolds a philosophical grammar of the semiotic dimensions.

Language, on Heinrichs’ guiding idea, is meta-action: a sign-action that regulates itself within the same enactment through its own meta-signs. From this the volume develops a complete systematics of language along four semiotic dimensions — sigmatics, semantics, pragmatics, syntactics — each in turn worked through under all four aspects (the “fourfold fourfoldness”): from the smallest sign-carriers through parts of speech and predication to sentence construction, text types, and figures of style. In the preface Heinrichs here coins the term logic of reflexion, which will carry his entire later work.

Who this volume is for

This is a work for specialists, collectors, and Heinrichs scholars — the historical source text, not the most accessible presentation. Readers who want to encounter the content of Heinrichs’ theory of language will find it in a more modern, fuller, and updated form in his five-volume work on language (Sprache, Vols. 1–5).

The appeal of this first edition lies in the origin: Heinrichs’ thinking on language in its early shape, in the style of early-1980s German academic philosophy, written before the age of layout software.

About this edition: Unlike the other volumes in this series, this is not a facsimile of the original print, but a volume newly typeset from the author’s surviving manuscript file.

This source has one peculiarity: the page numbers appear within the text rather than at the page margin. The numbering is complete and continuous — so citation by these page numbers is reliable — but the embedded digits interrupt the reading flow in places.
